Into the Planet Book by Jill Heinerth

Into the Planet is the latest book by Jill Heinerth available in Hardcover.  What makes this book unique is it’s Jill’s story of her.  Her life, her diving, her journey to become who she is today, the most recognized female cave diver in the world and a great photographer, instructor, explorer and friend.

Jill has been a friend of ours for well over 20 years.  We’ve worked on documentaries together,  have enjoyed working and helping on some fun photoshoots and video shoots alongside Jill and some of our favourite DDS Divers.  The only thing more fun than diving with Jill has been the  many a good evenings sharing stories over a good meal with our DDS friends and students over the years usually after some great diving.

We are beyond proud to see her tell her story because she’s one of the most interesting people in the world.

For those who aren’t familiar with Jill, she is a Canadian cave diver, underwater explorer, writer, photographer and filmmaker. More people have walked on the moon than have been to some of the places Jill has explored on earth. She has made TV series for the CBC, the National Geographic channel, and the BBC, consulted on movies, including for director James Cameron, and produced documentaries, including We Are Water and Ben’s Vortex. Jill’s accolades include induction into The Explorers Club and the inaugural class of the Women Divers Hall of Fame. She is also the inaugural Explorer-in-Residence for The Royal Canadian Geographic Society, and the recipient of Canada’s prestigious Polar Medal and the diving world’s highest award from the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences.

Jill Heinerth—the first person in history to dive deep into an Antarctic iceberg and leader of a team that discovered the ancient watery remains of Mayan civilizations—has descended farther into the inner depths of our planet than any other woman. She takes us into the harrowing split-second decisions that determine whether a diver makes it back to safety, the prejudices that prevent women from pursuing careers underwater, and her endeavor to recover a fallen friend’s body from the confines of a cave. But there’s beauty beyond the danger of diving, and while Heinerth swims beneath our feet in the lifeblood of our planet, she works with biologists discovering new species, physicists tracking climate change, and hydrogeologists examining our finite freshwater reserves.

From one of the world’s most renowned cave divers, a firsthand account of exploring the earth’s final frontier: the hidden depths of our oceans and the sunken caves inside our planet

Written with hair-raising intensity, Into the Planet is the first book to deliver an intimate account of cave diving, transporting readers deep into inner space, where fear must be reconciled and a mission’s success balances between knowing one’s limits and pushing the envelope of human endurance.
