Truk Lagoon 2016
This past March 2016 after three years of waiting DDS Divers finally got to embark on an amazing trip to Truk Lagoon or Chuuk as its also known, the site of the revenge of Pearl Harbour where the US Air Force rained heavily down upon the Japanese as a retaliation blitz known as Operation Hailstone, while they engaged in surface attacks as well.
Though the blitz only officially lasted from February 16-17, 1944, the US navy created a blockade starving the Japanese forces of supplies leading them resort to cannibalism and other cruel acts towards the locals and the over 10’000 Korean comfort women forced to leave their homes.
This blitz is what changed the tide of the second World War and altered history in favour of the USA.
For us scuba divers the bonus is getting the opportunity to explore these massive sunken underwater battleships, many of which are grave sites for hundreds of Japanese soldiers, as the wrecks are littered with human remains, empty bottles of Saki and a large number of artifacts.
Have look below at our amazing photos from this trip.
We started the trip off onshore with the Blue Lagoon Resort and Dive Shop where we got our bodies used to the time change, got comfortable with our surroundings, learned a little about this beautiful area and then started what was some phenomenal wreck diving. THe resort and dive shop were great.
The land based and liveaboard combination were something that we weren’t expecting to have to do after our previous dive boat sank, however, this was the best way to experience Truk because after a few days on the island we then spent a week diving with the SS Thorfinn on what was an exceptional experience.
